TREATMENT

Guided Biofilm Therapy

Biofilm: A Major Cause of Cavities and Gum Disease

Cavities are caused when bacteria in the mouth produce acid that dissolves tooth enamel. Gum disease, on the other hand, is an inflammatory condition triggered by bacteria that affect the gums and, if left untreated, can lead to the destruction of the bone supporting the teeth.

These bacteria gather and form a sticky, structured layer called biofilm (also known as plaque). Because biofilm adheres strongly to the surface of the teeth and the area between the teeth and gums, it is difficult to remove and can lead to the development of both cavities and gum disease.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

Guided Biofilm Therapy is a science-based approach to preventive dental care. While traditional cleanings have mainly focused on the removal of tartar, GBT places emphasis on the removal of biofilm—using techniques that are gentle on both teeth and gums.

The hallmark of GBT is the visualization of biofilm and its removal using a specialized device called AIRFLOW®. This allows for effective oral care without causing damage to the teeth or gums, offering a safer and more comfortable cleaning experience.

The Effectiveness of AIRFLOW

In Guided Biofilm Therapy, AIRFLOW® is a device that sprays a fine powder mixed with water at high pressure to efficiently remove biofilm. One of its key advantages is its ability to clean areas that are difficult to reach with traditional instruments—such as deep periodontal pockets, around orthodontic appliances, and around dental implants.

AIRFLOW® is especially effective in targeting subgingival biofilm (below the gumline), which plays a major role in the development of periodontal disease. By removing this biofilm, AIRFLOW® helps prevent the progression of gum disease.

Benefits of GBT

Minimally invasive and low discomfort

Compared to traditional scaling (tartar removal), GBT causes less pain and irritation, making the cleaning process more comfortable for patients.

Effective biofilm removal

By visualizing the biofilm before treatment, GBT enables more precise and thorough removal of bacteria.

Safe for implants and orthodontic appliances

GBT can safely clean around areas that are difficult to reach with conventional tools, such as around implants and orthodontic brackets.

Treatment Process

Oral Examination

We begin by examining the entire oral cavity to assess the risk of cavities and periodontal disease. This includes checking the condition of the gums and measuring the depth of the periodontal pockets.

next

Biofilm Visualization

A disclosing agent is applied to highlight the areas where biofilm has accumulated. This allows us to accurately identify the presence of bacteria and perform targeted cleaning.

next

Cleaning with AIRFLOW

Using a fine powder and water spray, AIRFLOW® effectively removes biofilm from the tooth surfaces and within periodontal pockets in a gentle, non-invasive manner.

next

Removal of Remaining Tartar

If any hard tartar remains that cannot be removed with AIRFLOW®, we carefully remove it using ultrasonic or manual scalers.

next

Final Check for Tartar and Cavities

A second check is performed to ensure all tartar has been removed and to look for any signs of cavities. If necessary, we may recommend additional treatment or preventive care.

next

Fluoride Application

Fluoride is applied to strengthen the teeth and help prevent future cavities. This also supports the process of remineralization and promotes a healthier oral environment.

Maintenance Plan Proposal

Based on your oral condition and risk assessment, we will suggest a personalized maintenance plan, including recommended cleaning intervals and at-home care tips.

Risks and Side Effects of GBT

  • As the treatment may stimulate the gum area, slight bleeding or discomfort may persist for a few days after the procedure.

  • The pressure from the particles sprayed by the AIRFLOW® device may cause some pain or discomfort.

  • Biofilm will naturally reattach after the treatment, so regular maintenance and care are necessary to ensure continued oral health.
